14.05.2013, 19. day, 124 / 2500 km, Igoumenitsa

Breakfast is not offered in the "hotel". The owner takes me to a small shop and translates for me. I buy some bread, butter and marmelade and take it back to the hotel, where I now have breakfast.
Then I start. The weather is good: no cloud in the sky!
But the 54 km to Sarande seem to be terrible because again and again I have to climb heavily. I guess that I use the first gear 95% of the time.
The problem is that I don't know how long it will be like this. The map doesn't tell anything about it. Often it goes about 400 m uphill and then fast downhill.
But 10 km in front of Sarande it goes continuously downhill. What a pleasure!
Sarande is a big city in which a lot of construction is taking place like in all Albania. The beach promenade is beautiful. Here I take a short break.
After this I go on to Greece. The road is narrow again. I have to take a ferry to cross a small channel. This is somewhat adventurous because I have to put the bike at the very corner of the ferry deck where I hold onto it for almost the whole ride. But it takes only 10 minutes.
There is no sign to Greece. The blacktop turns into gravel, and I ask myself whether I am still on the right road. I am.
Finally I arrive at the Greek border, but before I have to leave Albania first. The officer doesn't let me pass. He doesn't seem to realize where I entered Albania. Again and again he asks me from where in Greece I entered Albania. He can't imagine that I crossed the whole country by bike. I have to explain several times that I came through Montenegro and entered Albania at that border. Finally he lets me pass.
Also the Greek coast is very beautiful. But not the signage of the roads. I want to go through Kestrini, follow the only sign but come to Pagio where I didn't want to go. This is not a big detour, but it bothers me.
In Igoumenitsa there is no hint for the campground either. I rely on the map and find the campground after 4 km along the coast knowing that I have to return this way tomorrow.
But the campground is closed. I see some workers on the site. An older man notices me. He seems to be the owner - and speaks German! He tells me that the place was closed for some years and is now beeing reconstructed and not yet open. But I may stay and use the toilet and washroom.
About 500 m away is a restaurant where I can eat and upload the report.
Now I'm looking forward for my sleeping bag.

The second window to the right of the streetlight was my room

The Albanian coast is picturesque

The road often goes away from the coast into the mountains

Finally it goes downhill for a longer time
